No matter what your age, making mindful health decisions is important for your long term well-being. Many common diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and some forms of cancer, are directly related to our lifestyle decisions. Quitting smoking, consuming healthier foods and beverage options, increasing activity levels, and reducing added sugar intake can make a significant difference in your health throughout the decades.

In recognition of Women’s Health Week (May 11-18, 2014),  UPMC Sports Medicine offers tips on how to live well through each decade of your life.

If you are a 60-something…

Your 60s are a time to reinvent how you’re going to spend the next 20+ years of your life. A 60-something can choose to slow down or get up and become more active. It’s never too late to start making decisions that will enhance your health and, ultimately, your quality of life. Find a physical activity that you enjoy and stick with it. Whether it’s Zumba®, walking, or watching your grandchildren, staying active, and engaged is important.

If you are a 70-something +…

The most important health concern for women age 70 and older is ensuring a safe living environment. A safe home helps to reduce the number of falls and trips. The number one predictor of a fracture is a previous one, which means reducing your risk of initial injury will help reduce the risk of additional injuries. Staying active through walking or another aerobic exercise will help maintain bone strength through 70s and beyond. Additionally, it’s important to schedule regular health exams and speak up if any issues arise.

Regardless of your age, establish a relationship with your healthcare provider. The first time you meet your doctor shouldn’t be in an emergency. A physician is able to offer better treatment if he or she is familiar your needs and history. Additionally, having regular exams and annual check-ups are essential in maintaining good health and detecting any possible issues early.
