Functions of the Skeletal System
Made up of 206 bones, the skeletal system’s functions include:
- Blood cell production
- Ion storage
- Endocrine regulation
Do you know what makes up a bone in your body? Working from the outside in, here is a breakdown of your bone composition:
- Periosteum – Outer surface, thin membrane containing nerves and blood vessels
- Compact bone – smooth and hard, under the periosteum
- Cancellous bone – inside compact bone, resembles a sponge
- Bone marrow – inside compact bone, makes blood cells, resembles a thick jelly
