Bone Composition

Do you know what makes up a bone in your body? Working from the outside in, here is a breakdown of your bone composition:

  1. Periosteum – Outer surface, thin membrane containing nerves and blood vessels
  2. Compact bone – smooth and hard, under the periosteum
  3. Cancellous bone – inside compact bone, resembles a sponge
  4. Bone marrow – inside compact bone, makes blood cells, resembles a thick jelly
