cervical and ovarian cancer treatment

For many women, understanding the symptoms of ovarian and cervical cancers may seem difficult. Thankfully, there are tests that help detect cervical cancer early, and there are symptoms of ovarian cancer that you can look out for early on. As with any cancer, early detection is essential in improving outcomes.

Understandably, no two cancers are the same and only your doctor and you can create a treatment plan unique to you.

At UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, patients with ovarian or cervical cancer are treated by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Your care team may include a:

  • Gynecologist — a doctor who specializes in treatment of disease affecting the female reproductive system.
  • Radiation oncologist — a doctor who uses radiation to treat cancer.
  • Medical oncologist — a doctor who uses chemotherapy and other drugs to treat cancer.
  • Gynecological oncologist — a doctor who specializes in treatment of cancers affecting the female reproductive system.

After your doctor establishes the stage and depth (how far it has grown) of the cancer, your team will recommend treatment options.

When planning your treatment, your care team will take many factors into consideration, such as the cancer stage, your age, your preference regarding having children, and your general health.
