More than 30,000 people in the United States live with Huntington’s disease — a genetic brain disorder that deteriorates the mind and body over time.

Little more than a decade ago, people diagnosed with Huntington’s disease faced a grim future: Those who survived the disease long enough lost the ability to live independently and perform everyday tasks.

But work from the UPMC Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence offers hope that people with the disorder can liver fuller, more independent lives. The Pittsburgh-based clinic received a 2015 grant from the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, enabling it to expand its services.
