What Is a Lactation Center?

A lactation center is a place that serves as a resource for new and expecting mothers. Services offered at the center enable moms to learn more about breastfeeding their babies.

The Lactation Center at Magee is staffed by nurses and other medical professionals who have achieved special certification as lactation consultants. They can teach you how to breastfeed, provide support and encouragement, and answer your questions about the breastfeeding process.

What Services Does a Lactation Center Offer?

The Lactation Center at Magee-Womens Hospital offers a variety of services and breastfeeding supplies.

A lactation consultant is available to offer support, whether you are in the hospital or are already at home. New moms also can schedule regular appointments at the center.

Other services include:

  • Prenatal consultations for expectant mothers
  • Postpartum breastfeeding consultations
  • A retail center that offers a variety of nursing supplies, clothing, and books

Prenatal consultations are available to anyone but are especially important if you have had trouble nursing in the past. Our lactation consultants recommend making an appointment after the birth of your child if you experience any of the following:

  • Sore nipples
  • Low milk supply
  • Inadequate infant weight gain
  • Planning to transition back to work
  • Multiple births
  • Previous breast surgery
