Meet the Liver Transplant Team Members

Transplant hepatologist

A hepatologist, a specialist in diagnosing and treating patients with liver disease, will review your medical and physical history, monitor your symptoms, and work with you to decide on best treatment options.

Liver transplant surgeon

If your disease has progressed to a severe stage, you will meet with a liver transplant surgeon who will continue to monitor your condition and review treatment options with you. If you’re approved for a transplant, the liver transplant surgeon will perform the operation.

Liver transplant coordinator

The transplant coordinator will help you and your family understand and navigate the transplant process. From your initial evaluation on, the transplant coordinator will be by your side to answer questions.

Living donor transplant coordinator

People on the liver transplant waiting list often decide that a living donor transplant is their best option. When that happens, a living donor coordinator works with potential donors to answer questions and coordinate their care.

Nutritionist

Before and after transplant surgery, it’s very important to follow a balanced diet and stay as healthy as possible. Your nutritionist will evaluate your diet and recommend any necessary changes.

Pharmacist

Your transplant pharmacist will meet with you to discuss the medicines you’re taking, including over-the-counter medicines, and counsel you about the new medicines you will take after your transplant.

Social Worker

A social worker will work with you to ensure you have a healthy support system that includes a dedicated caregiver and discuss your insurance coverage and fundraising options.

Psychologist

Undergoing this procedure is a big step. A psychologist will work with you and your family to help you deal with the emotional stress, as well as identify and address possible family or mental health issues.

Credit analyst

Because it’s very important for you and your family to understand your insurance coverage and benefits, you will also meet with a credit analyst who can answer insurance questions and help you prepare for any costs that insurance will not cover.

Living donor advocate

Are you receiving a transplant from a living donor? A living donor advocate will work with your prospective donor to provide evaluation and care, listen to any concerns, and answer all questions.

Whether you’re receiving a liver transplant from a deceased or a living donor, members of the UPMC Liver Transplant Program are by your side the entire time and will support you through the whole journey.
