What Is the Midlife Health Center?

The Midlife Health Center is one of the few programs in the region catering to women going through perimenopause and menopause.

Women who are experiencing the symptoms of menopause can find support for medical issues, reach out for help in managing symptoms, and have regular gynecological checkups at the Midlife Health Center. The center features doctors credentialed as Certified Menopause Practitioners through the North American Menopause Society.

What does that mean? The doctors specialize in the symptoms and management of menopause issues.

They can offer help with a specific problem, guidance on general issues, or help with symptom relief. Patients can come on an “as needed” basis, or visit regularly to see one of the highly specialized doctors as their primary care gynecologist.

Support Throughout Menopause

A woman doesn’t simply just stop having periods and is magically in menopause. She may enter perimenopause first, when her period may come and go erratically, and she may begin to start experiencing the symptoms of menopause. The transition from perimenopause to menopause can happen gradually and with a slew of confusing symptoms.

For instance, the median length of time that hot flashes last is about seven years, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). This is significant because JAMA states that hot flashes affect up to 80 percent of women during the menopausal transition.

Doctors at the Midlife Health Center at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital can help manage the following symptoms:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Heart palpitations
  • Insomnia
  • Emotional changes and mood swings
  • Memory problems
  • Vaginal dryness

Doctors can also recommend treatment for menopause symptoms. The treatments include behavior changes that may help, hormonal treatments, non-hormonal treatments, and some alternative (complementary) medicine treatments. The staff there can also help with specialized guidance and support.

With all of these resources and forms of support, you don’t have to worry about dealing with symptoms of menopause alone.
