View UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital newborns wear ugly Christmas sweaters

The babies at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital could make any ugly Christmas sweater look oh-so adorable.

These Christmas-season newborns attended their first ugly sweater party while in the Magee nursery. Staff members bundled them up in handmade sweaters and hats, complete with festive colors, candy cane stripes, and penguin appliques.

Parents spending part of the holiday season at Magee got to take home the sweaters and hats as keepsakes.

Dressing newborns at Christmastime is a tradition at Magee. In the past, our babies rang in the holiday season cuddled up in tiny stockings, gingerbread onesies, and reindeer hats and blankets. This year’s sweater party was courtesy Magee nurse Caitlin Pechin, who hand-crocheted each sweater and cap.

Pechin, who began knitting and crocheting in 2009, has helped bring to life several events at Magee, including last year’s gingerbread nursery. She’s also handcrafted mini-football helmets to celebrate the Pittsburgh Steelers and helmets and skates in honor of the Pittsburgh Penguins draft.
