Learn more about how UPMC supports supply chain diversity.

For years, UPMC has been committed to supporting diverse suppliers across a variety of business sizes, types, and ownership nationalities, and orientations. Because we understand that supporting supplier diversity helps foster entrepreneurship and stimulate the business community, it has become an integral part of our overall Supply Chain Management (SCM) strategy. What Is the UPMC Supplier Diversity & Inclusion Program?

UPMC’s Supplier Diversity & Inclusion Program  provides certified minority, woman-owned, disabled, veteran and service-disabled veteran, LGBTQ, and disadvantaged suppliers (diverse) equal access to procurement opportunities.

The program’s primary focus is to grow the capacity of certified diverse suppliers and to ensure that all are provided with the maximum opportunity to participate as partners and suppliers of goods and services to UPMC.

  • UPMC is always recruiting diverse certified suppliers to participate in the Supplier Diversity & Inclusion Program.
  • UPMC seeks to enter business relationships with certified diverse suppliers who provide quality, cost-competitive products, and services to UPMC.
  • The program’s Diverse Business Education and Development Initiative provides education, training, mentoring, and networking opportunities to diverse members.

How Businesses Can Participate in the Program

To participate in the program, a business must be verified, self-certified, or certified as:

  • Minority-owned
  • Woman-owned
  • Disadvantaged business enterprise
  • LGBT-owned
  • Veteran-owned

To be certified, a business must do the following:

  • Maintain 51 percent ownership and maintain daily control of their business
  • Be located in the U.S. or its territories
  • Owner must be a U.S. citizen

“UPMC has supported and championed Supplier Diversity & Inclusion for almost 25 years. In that time, we have successfully engaged diverse suppliers who provide us high-quality goods and services and who partner with us to achieve Life Changing Medicine in all we do. In the past ten-year period, UPMC has conducted over $1 billion in business with diverse suppliers, and that number is increasing at a faster rate than ever. Thank you to our diverse business partners and suppliers. We’re open for business,” George Robinson, director of Supplier Diversity & Inclusion.

Partnership with IBEX to Increase Supplier Diversity

To increase supplier diversity UPMC and Atlanta-based IBEX IT Business Experts have recently teamed up to create a technology that aims to increase the use of diverse suppliers by UPMC and other health care companies. IBEX is a Black American, woman-owned IT solutions and delivery firm.

The result of this collaboration is a user-friendly, web-based system built specifically for supplier diversity managers. The new tool registers and tracks diverse suppliers and spending with vendors. It also makes it simple to search for suppliers by key characteristics, such as location, type of ownership, or products and services offered and to automate tasks such as updating needed certifications.
