Treating BPH with Water Vapor

Sergio Giancola, MD, and Hassan Taan, MD, fellowship-trained urologists at UPMC Northwest are among only a few doctors in the region trained to use Rezùm™ water vapor therapy to treat BPH. The minimally invasive procedure injects steam into the prostate. This technique encourages the prostate tissue to shrink. Unlike traditional surgical procedures to treat BPH, which involve cutting excess prostate tissue, Rezùm™ does not cause bleeding or affect sexual function.

What Is BPH?

BPH is a non-cancerous growth of prostate tissue. Because the prostate gland surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, the excess tissue can press on the urethra and interfere with urine flow.

Symptoms of BPH

  • Straining while urinating
  • Having a frequent urge to urinate
  • Getting up several times a night to use the bathroom
  • A urine stream that keeps stopping and going
  • Feeling that the bladder is not completely empty after urinating
  • Having a weak urine stream
