3D mammograms. This technology allows the radiologist to see breast tissue details more clearly and may uncover breast cancer that would otherwise be hidden by overlying breast tissue.

The new UPMC Magee-Womens Imaging location at the UPMC Outpatient Center in Hampton offers women peace of mind with the latest 3D mammography technology — plus convenient access and ample free parking.

Karen McAdam and Susan Pastura have never met, but they share a common ritual. Because both women have a family history of breast cancer, they’re committed to getting their annual screening mammograms.

In fact, it took a pandemic for them to nearly miss their annual exams — until they both made appointments with Magee-Womens Imaging at the UPMC Outpatient Center, located on Mt. Royal Boulevard off Route 8 in Hampton.

“I was getting ready to make my usual appointment and then COVID-19 happened,” says Karen, 71, of Springdale, Pennsylvania. “By October 2020, I realized that I needed to cross that off my list!” Now retired, the former payroll specialist soon learned that, like her, many women had delayed their annual mammograms – x-rays of breast tissue – due to the pandemic, often resulting in longer wait times for an appointment.

“The scheduler asked if I’d consider going to the center in Hampton off Route 8 — and I jumped at it,” she says. “I had my mammogram within two weeks.”

Susan, 62, scheduled her mammogram at the same location. “I was planning to go to another location, but I was thrilled to get a same-week appointment at Hampton,” says the long-time accounting manager. “I live in Gibsonia and work in Indiana Township, so the Hampton location was convenient for me from either home or the office. I am so glad that this new location is now an option.”

Detecting Breast Cancer Early

Both women praised the staff and the imaging suite, which offers 3D screening mammograms — or digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) — the latest FDA-approved tool used to find breast cancer early, when it is most treatable and more options are available. For the last 15 years, researchers and doctors at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital have pioneered the use of 3D mammograms. This technology allows the radiologist to see breast tissue details more clearly and may uncover breast cancer that would otherwise be hidden by overlying breast tissue.

Susan Pastura, Patient

“The facility is beautiful and spotless, the staff was terrific, and the free parking was wonderful and hassle-free,” says Susan. “It felt very safe. I definitely plan to schedule my next appointment there.”

“The technologist who did my mammogram, Gena Matoka, was a gem. I’m always a little nervous when I go for a mammogram because my sister died of a rare type of breast cancer. Gena really put me at ease,” says Karen.

In addition to the imaging suite, the UPMC Outpatient Center features primary care and OB/GYN practices, making it easy for women to get all their health care in one location. Like all UPMC facilities, the outpatient center continues to follow strict safety guidelines to protect against spreading COVID-19.

The opening of this location is a continuation of UPMC’s commitment to advanced women’s health care in the north, which includes expanding care and services at both UPMC Passavant campuses, as well as the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.
