Emergency or Urgent Care

Located in the UPMC Outpatient Center in Bethel Park, the UPMC South Surgery Center brings expert surgical services to thousands of South Hills patients — close to home.

Having surgery doesn’t always mean an overnight hospital stay. In fact, nearly 70% of all surgery patients in the United States head home within hours of an operation. And more than half of all elective surgeries no longer happen in hospitals.

At the UPMC South Surgery Center, UPMC surgeons perform about 3,200 elective surgeries and other procedures each year using state-of-the-art equipment and the newest surgical techniques.

According to Shiv Goel, MD, medical director of the UPMC South Surgery Center, outpatient surgery offers many advantages over traditional inpatient surgery without compromising quality of care.

“With outpatient surgery, you return home the same day as your procedure,” says Dr. Goel. “Patients receive care in a safe and comfortable setting provided by a medical team focused on their care.”

The surgery center offers South Hills area residents convenient access to a full range of surgical, medical, and diagnostic procedures. The surgery center’s surgeons and anesthesiologists also practice in UPMC hospitals in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, notes Dr. Goel.

Dr. Goel is an anesthesiologist at the surgery center as well as the center’s medical director. He also serves as chief anesthesiologist at UPMC Shadyside.

“Almost any surgery that can be performed without an overnight stay can be performed here,” says Dr. Goel. “Patients don’t have to travel far from home to have procedures done by highly trained surgeons.”

The UPMC South Surgery Center

The UPMC South Surgery Center is located in the UPMC Outpatient Center at 1300 Oxford Drive (off Route 19 near South Hills Village). It features:

  • 4 state-of-the-art operating rooms
  • 6 preoperative rooms
  • 12 postoperative rooms

Among the many procedures performed at the surgery center are cataract surgery; ACL repairs; ankle, knee, hip, and shoulder arthroscopy; and colonoscopies.

Other common outpatient procedures include:

  • Breast procedures (lumpectomy, sentinel node biopsy)
  • Diagnostic GI procedures
  • Foot and ankle surgery
  • Gynecologic procedures
  • Hand surgery
  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Pain management
  • Podiatry procedures

The UPMC Outpatient Center also is home to numerous specialists, so patients have access to the care they need before and after surgery. Imaging services — including x-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs — are available in the same building.

Two anesthesiologists — including specialists in regional anesthesia and acute pain management — are onsite during procedures. They use best practices and the latest methods to manage pain and reduce opioid use. That’s one reason why 90% of surgery center procedures are performed without using opioids, says Dr. Goel.

Other surgery center staff include nurse anesthetists, registered nurses, radiologic technicians, and operating room technicians.

A doctor’s referral is needed to schedule an outpatient surgical or diagnostic procedure at the UPMC South Surgery Center. For more information, call 412-851-8600.
