Innovative Treatments, Here in the North

In most cases, our doctors use nonoperative techniques, including the latest treatments like orthobiologic injections and shockwave therapy. Advanced surgical procedures include minimally invasive arthroscopy and tendoscopy surgeries.

In the northern communities of Pittsburgh, our providers offer the care and services of one of the nation’s top orthopaedic programs — closer to home and work:

  • MaCalus Hogan, MD, MBA, vice chair and chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery in the UPMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, practices at various locations including the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township. He also is a foot and ankle consultant for UPMC Sports Medicine. Dr. Hogan is an international leader in sports foot and ankle injury management and orthobiologics research. “When care and innovation are closer to home, it lessens patient anxiety and creates a more efficient patient experience,” says Dr. Hogan. “It drives better outcomes in both operative and nonoperative treatments.”
  • Stephen Conti, MD, a surgeon with Orthopaedic SpecialistsUPMC, has a clinical focus on bunion and toe deformity. “We use advanced 3D imaging to understand the issue and to improve patient outcomes,” says Dr. Conti, who sees patients in Bethel Park, McCandless, Monroeville, and Sewickley. He was one of the first doctors in the country to perform ankle replacement surgery to treat ankle arthritis.
  • Christopher Edwards, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon at Tri Rivers Musculoskeletal Centers, started offering patients a minimally invasive option to repair Achilles tendon ruptures in 2020. “This is done through small incisions with less risk of infection and wound healing difficulty. I also offer minimally invasive treatment of ankle fractures in select populations,” says Dr. Edwards. Tri Rivers Musculoskeletal Centers has offices in Butler, Mars, and Slippery Rock.

With advanced on-site imaging at locations such as the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, doctors work with radiologists to accurately diagnose and plan the best treatment for each patient.

Healing the Community’s Sole(s)

When they are not seeing patients in the office, these surgeons offer their expertise to the community. Dr. Hogan serves as a foot and ankle consultant for the athletic departments at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, and Robert Morris University. He is assistant team doctor for Point Park University and its Conservatory of Performing Arts, as well as the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

In 2004, Dr. Conti and his family founded “Our Hearts to Your Soles,” a nonprofit that provides free medical foot examinations and shoes to the less fortunate. Today, the organization’s work has impacted communities in more than 35 locations across the United States.

As a team doctor with Mars High School football team, Dr. Edwards stands on the sidelines — at the ready to treat athletes’ injuries. “I played football in high school and college and this has been a rewarding way for me to give back to the community,” he says.
