Patient and Nurse

A top priority for Lindsey Haga, MD, is providing excellent vascular care to residents in Pittsburgh’s South Hills communities. Dr. Haga treats a wide range of conditions, including varicose veins and nonhealing wounds, at the new UPMC Outpatient Center on Clairton Boulevard, just off Route 51 in West Mifflin. Read on for our Q&A with her.

Q: What are common conditions you treat?

UPMC Division of Vascular Surgery offers advanced treatments and preventive services for all types of heart and vascular conditions. The most common conditions Dr. Haga sees patients for are:

  • Aneurysmal disease.
  • Carotid disease.
  • Nonhealing wounds and limb salvage.
  • Peripheral arterial disease.
  • Venous disease.

The vascular team at the UPMC Outpatient Center on Clairton Boulevard also provides dialysis access for patients with end-stage kidney disease. Before a patient begins dialysis, a surgeon creates a way for the dialysis machine to access the blood vessels. There are two types of dialysis offered at this location:

  • Arteriovenous fistula.
  • Arteriovenous graft.

Q: What vascular services are provided at the new UPMC Outpatient Center?

Dr. Haga says it is important to provide convenient access to expert vascular care so patients don’t need to travel far to get care or maintain regular preventive screenings.

The vascular team works closely with your primary care doctor to provide support for your overall care, making sure it is optimized from a vascular surgery standpoint. This includes offering a full range of vascular testing and screenings, such as vascular disease risk evaluations and noninvasive diagnostic vascular testing. These are simple and painless tests that use ultrasound to determine the presence, location, and severity of vascular disease.

“Vascular disease can progress rapidly, so we make sure to see patients as quickly as possible. We try to consolidate each patient’s treatment plan so they get the expedited care they need, where, and when they need it,” says Dr. Haga.

Q: What are the benefits of seeing a vascular surgeon?

Because vascular surgery at the UPMC Outpatient Center functions as part of the larger UPMC division, one of its biggest assets to patients is its collaborative relationship with other doctors and surgeons.

“We have the resources to evaluate and treat patients in their geographic region. Additionally, patients can have their treatment plans reviewed by multiple vascular surgeons in our division at UPMC, which helps them from a decision-making standpoint,” says Dr. Haga.

“We also have access to state-of-the-art technology and research which are key components in our practice of the standard of care with evidence-based medicine and innovation.” she adds. “Patients can feel safe with their treatment plans, which is extremely important when it comes to having surgery.”

Q: What vascular surgical services are offered at UPMC Outpatient Center?

The UPMC Outpatient Center provides minimally invasive treatments for venous disease, like superficial varicose veins. There are plans to provide onsite outpatient surgical services for conditions in the great saphenous and the small saphenous veins at this location.
