Cancer Care Close to Home

If you or a loved one has cancer, getting the best care possible is critical. And when you can get that care close to home, it’s even better.

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center provides its world-class cancer services at more than 70 locations throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and Ohio. That means you can get the care you need without having to travel too far.

“If I’m a cancer patient, it’s a very big deal to be able to be tied into a first-rate academic center that specializes in world-class cancer care,” says Terry Evans, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine, and medical director, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Arnold Palmer Pavilion in Greensburg.

“To be able to offer this out in the community, without the patients and families having to actually drive into the city, is important.”

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Services

UPMC Hillman provides a wide range of cancer services for patients and families, from diagnosis to treatment. Our experts treat all types of cancer.

At Hillman, we provide access to the most advanced tools and techniques in cancer treatment. Smart technology allows us to detect cancer earlier and treat even the most difficult cancers.

Those cutting-edge approaches are available throughout the UPMC Hillman network at our community locations.

“It’s the same care that you would get in Pittsburgh that we’re able to provide in the community, right where the patients live,” says Sanjeev Bahri, MD, director, radiation oncology, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Arnold Palmer Pavilion.

For example, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Arnold Palmer Pavilion offers common radiation therapy treatments like image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Dr. Bahri also specializes in a high-dose-rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer, which can be more effective with fewer side effects.

“Being able to provide that in the community is fairly advanced, and patients really benefit from that,” Dr. Bahri says.

Because all 70-plus community locations are connected to the UPMC Hillman network, doctors can consult with specialists in Pittsburgh and elsewhere on complex cases.

And, maybe most importantly, access to groundbreaking clinical trials is available throughout the UPMC Hillman network. That allows patients at any UPMC Hillman location to have access to potentially revolutionary new cancer treatments.

“Taking the same clinical trial programs that are offered at the main campus at Hillman in Shadyside and allowing patients and families out in the community to participate is a big deal,” Dr. Evans says.

Finally, UPMC Hillman offers many different support services for patients and families, including nutrition consultation, palliative care, mental health support, and more.

The Value of Local Cancer Care

When you have cancer, it can make things difficult for you and your loved ones — especially when you have frequent treatments.

“A lot of our patients don’t really want to travel out of the community to a city to get their care,” Dr. Bahri says. “Especially with radiation oncology, when they’re getting daily treatments for several weeks, it becomes taxing for the families and the patients to travel to get their daily treatment.”

UPMC Hillman tries to relieve some of your burden by offering our services at more than 70 locations throughout the community. This means many people don’t have to travel far from home to get their cancer care. Our cancer network is one of the largest community cancer networks in the United States.

Many of our experts live and work in the communities they serve, a shared experience that can help them build a better relationship with patients.

“What’s different in the community is you know a lot of these people,” Dr. Evans says. “I’ve been out here for 30 years, so I see these people in church. I see them at (the gym). I see them on the golf course and in the supermarket. And so, they become more than just patients. There are people that you develop a lasting relationship with over the years.”
