Men may be more likely to have a stroke, but women have a higher lifetime risk and are more likely to die from the condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Stroke affects more than 800,000 Americans each year, making it the fifth-leading cause of death in the country. The condition occurs when a blood clot or ruptured vessel cuts off blood flow to the brain. This deprives the brain of essential oxygen and nutrients.
While stroke is common, women in particular face a unique set of risk factors. They live longer on average and are more likely to experience high blood pressure, particularly as they age.
Additionally, early-onset hypertension is related to an elevated risk for cardiovascular death in women. Coupled with obesity and smoking, women further increase their risk for stroke.
