A new, state-of-the-art pediatric ambulance will transport critically ill children and babies from hospitals within 150 miles of Pittsburgh to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
UPMC Children’s teamed with STAT Medevac and Lifeline to design the UPMC Children’s Hospital STAT Medevac ambulance, which will debut in summer 2021.

The ambulance will allow critically ill children and babies to get the care they need. The UPMC Children’s Critical Care Transport Team will bring children and their families to UPMC Children’s. There, they will have access to care from UPMC Children’s renowned medical and surgical experts.
The ambulance is a pediatric intensive care unit on wheels, supplied with essential equipment, including a generator and additional oxygen. It includes a heavy-duty inverter to allow for equipment power and charging, as well as USB outlets.

The vehicle also has an onboard GPS with tracking by the STAT Medevac Communications Center. A four-door cab provides extra room for families. An intercom system will allow for easier communication between the ambulance operator and the care team.
When not in use, the colorful, kid-friendly ambulance will be stationed at UPMC Children’s campus in Lawrenceville. That will allow for easier access and a faster response time.
The Critical Care Transport Team can transport patients by ambulance, helicopter, or aircraft. The team is available 24/7. Call 412-692-5000 for transport, referral, or consultation.
